Sugarloaf Key Real Estate

Don’t miss a sunset here at Sugarloaf Key, where relaxation is a way of life. Clear skies, undulating waves, and red-beaked ibis will greet you during the day, while restful and comforting silence will envelop you at night.

Located between Cudjoe Key and Saddlebunch Keys, this Caribbean getaway joins the likes of Maui and the Bahamas in Islands Magazine’s list of “Best Islands to Live On.”

The Overseas Highway cuts through it at Mile Marker 17.5-18.5, making it appear as if it’s made up of two islands, but it isn’t. It does have two areas, namely Upper and Lower Sugarloaf. The latter, also known as Sugarloaf Shores, is smaller but more densely populated than the former.

Sugarloaf Key Homes for Sale

This U-shaped island has a wonderful mix of historic homes and new construction. The gulf side of Indian Mound subdivision has the highest concentration of historic homes, but overall the community has the look and feel of a modern suburb.

Most residences are located south of Overseas Highway. Those who own shallow draft boats have easy access to backcountry waters, though there’s no access for large boats and sailboats.

The housing stock is primarily made up of single-family homes. Some of these are by the water, but there’s also a supply of dry-lot homes or homes that don’t front water views or canals.

The average home has 3 to 4 bedrooms and 2 to 3.5 bathrooms, with floor plans that cover 1,800 to nearly 3,000 square feet. Vacant lots of between 5,000 to 12,000 square feet are also available for purchase.

Luxury homes usually come with stunning features like waterfront pools, tropical landscaping, tiki pavilions, concrete docks, and breathtaking views of the bay.

Lifestyle

The island’s turquoise waters and diverse wildlife allow for numerous nature-based activities. Wade out into the sea and spot some dolphins. Go birdwatching – some parts of the key belong to the Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge, so there’s no shortage of flora and fauna to observe.

Sugarloaf’s backcountry is also renowned for excellent flats fishing. Scour the flats for sponges and other aquatic life.

Pay a visit to the Bat Tower, which is listed on the US Register of Historic Places. The tower was meant to house bats that were brought to the island in 1929 in a failed but admirable attempt to control the mosquito problem of the Lower Keys.

Shopping, Dining, and Nightlife

A handful of bars and restaurants make up the nightlife and dining scene of Sugarloaf Keys.

  • Enjoy a casual dining atmosphere at Mangrove Mama, where grilled tuna, seafood pasta, and pan-seared scallops are just some of the dishes on offer.
  • Come to Sugarloaf Pizza for tasty toppings like jalapeño peppers, artichoke hearts, shrimp, ricotta cheese, and sausage. Chicken wings, burgers, and tacos are also on the menu.
  • You can look forward to live musical performances and pub-style trivia nights at Sugarloaf Lodge Tiki Bar. Get tipsy on ice cold beer, cocktails, or frozen drinks while admiring fabulous views of the water.
