Key Colony Beach Real Estate

Located in the Middle Florida Keys, Key Colony Beach is a community nestled within the continental United States’ only living coral reef, and the charm only begins there. Actually incorporated as a miniature city, Key Colony Beach is home to roughly 250 families. After being enlarged in the early 1950s by a man by the name of Phil Sadowski, Shelter Key- later Key Colony Beach, began to be developed, and became an incorporated city in 1957.

After being destroyed by Hurricane Donna in 1960, the incorporation of Key Colony Beach paid off- the city received its own federal grant to begin reconstruction, whereas the nearby unincorporated communities had to split their recovery money between all of Monroe County.

Key Colony Beach Realty

Key Colony Beach is a serene community, like most of those in the Keys. Unlike many of the other Keys communities, however, Key Colony Beach has a sense of independence- it is an incorporated city, with its own police station, town hall, and post office. To complete the image of a fully functioning local government, there is a park with tennis courts and a golf course, something not many of the other islands of this size can claim to have. In addition to being its own city, Key Colony Beach is also not connected to US Highway 1, the overseas highway that connects many of the other Keys to mainland Florida, adding just one more degree of separation from the rest.

Despite all this, Key Colony Beach is still very much part of the Keys. Swimming with dolphins and wrestling bonefish are both prominent pastimes, and an entire ocean-facing side of the island is devoted to condominiums and hotels. There’s also a dock where charter fishing boats congregate, funnily enough, right next to a restaurant known as Sparky’s Landing. The streets of the residential area are numbered from 1 to 15, from east to west, making it difficult to get lost, and, as with all of the Keys, you’re never more than spitting distance from a beach!

Homes for Sale Key Colony Beach, FL

With a large residential area, and even land for sale, just waiting to have someone’s ocean dream house built on it, the real estate scene on Key Colony Beach is definitely on the rise from its prolonged slump- after being destroyed by a hurricane in the ‘60s, as well as an indirect effect of Fidel Castro’s takeover of Cuba, the community of Key Colony Beach has never been doing better than it is today! If you aren’t looking to live there, and just want to get away for a while, the rental and condo scenes are amazing in quality.
